Over time the mouth corners start to turn downwards which can make the mouth look sad or glum. Using anti-wrinkle injections we can inject into the muscles that cause the mouth to turn down, thereby lifting the mouth corners.
How to lift the mouth corners with anti-wrinkle injections
Click on the video below to watch how anti-wrinkle injections can be used to prevent downturning of the mouth and lift the mouth corners.
Muscles responsible for a downturning mouth
The DAO muscle (depressor angularis oris) and DLI (depressor labii inferioris) are the two main muscles that cause downturning of the mouth. These muscles pull the corners of the mouth down and can give a glum apperance.
Anti-wrinkle treatment to reduce mouth downturning
We can inject small amounts of anti-wrinkle treatment into the DAO muscle to prevent downturning of the mouth. Generally speaking we use 2-3 units each side and place the injections on the jawline. There are a number of places that you could inject into the DAO muscle but we feel the safest place to inject is on the jawline, where the muscle inserts.
Possible complications of treating the DAO muscle
When injecting into the DAO we have to be very careful that we don’t affect nearby muscles. The depressor labii inferioris muscle (DLI) is very close to the DAO. If the anti-wrinkle product is injected into the DLI or spreads into this muscle it can cause a lopsided smile. Fortunately this a rare complication and if it was to occur we would expect for the effects to wear off within a few weeks.
How much will the treatment lift the mouth corner?
I often say to patients that the effects are subtle. We often combine anti-wrinkle treatment with dermal filler to treat the marionette area to treat a downturning mouth.
How much does the treatment cost?
If we use 5 units of anti-wrinkle treatment the cost is $60. It will have a subtle effect and often we recommend combining this treatment with 1.0ml of dermal filler in the mouth area.
