How do Wrinkle Treatments Work?
In the world of cosmetic treatments, wrinkle treatments are an option that many people choose to help to address concerns about fine lines and wrinkles. This month, we explore this treatment, focusing on how wrinkle treatments work, where to go for a wrinkle treatment consultation, including the importance of choosing a reputable cosmetic clinic in Melbourne.
How do Wrinkle Treatments Work?
Anti wrinkle treatments are a non-surgical way to address concerns about fine lines and wrinkles, targeting specific facial muscles responsible for wrinkles. Administered by skilled professionals, these treatments are carefully placed in predetermined areas of concern, like the forehead, crow’s feet, and frown lines. Once this happens, the transmission of signals between the nerves and the muscles in interrupted, effectively blocking muscle contractions.
By inhibiting these contractions, the facial muscles relax, allowing the overlaying skin to smooth out and the wrinkles to diminish. This essentially ‘freezes’ the treated muscles, preventing them from forming dynamic wrinkles that are formed by facial expressions like smiling or frowning.
Patients can typically begin to notice results within a few days, with the full effects becoming evident within two weeks. The longevity of the results will vary from person to person, but they generally last for three to four months before gradually wearing off. Regular maintenance treatments are often recommended to sustain the desired outcome.
Safety is paramount when it comes to wrinkle treatments, and at Cityskin, this is our top priority. Wrinkle treatments must be carried out by qualified medical professionals that adhere to strict protocols to minimise risks, and you can rest assured that you are in professional and experienced hands at all times.
You can expect side effects such as mild bruising, swelling, or temporary headaches, but these side effects are usually minor and transient. It is also important to note that choosing a reputable practitioner with expertise in facial anatomy and treatment techniques. This is essential for achieving optimal results and minimising the risk of complications.
What is the Science Behind Wrinkle Treatments?
The picture below shows a typical nerve in the body. When you want to make a muscle contract your brain sends a signal down the nerve (indicated by the yellow arrows travelling down the nerve). Once the signal reaches the end of the nerve it stimulates the release of a chemical called acetylcholine.
Acetylcholine (the blue circles in the diagram above) travels across the gap between the nerve and the muscle and binds to a small receptor on the muscle side of the gap. When acetylcholine has attached to the receptor a cascade of reactions occurs resulting in the contraction of the muscle.
When the wrinkle treatment is provided, it sits at the end of the nerve as shown in the diagram above, blocking the release of acetylcholine from the end of the nerve thus preventing the muscle from receiving the message to contract. Without this contraction of the muscle, the lines are reduced.
What is the Procedure?
When you decide that you would like to start the process towards wrinkle treatment, the first step is to schedule a consultation with a Cityskin clinician. Do I Need Post-Treatment Care?
Following the procedure, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and excessive sun exposure for the remainder of the day. Some may experience mild redness or swelling at the treatment sites, but these side effects typically resolve within a few hours to days.
What About Results and Maintenance?
One of the key advantages of this treatment is their rapid onset of action, with noticeable results becoming apparent within days. However, these results are not permanent and typically last for three to four months. To maintain the desired outcome, patients often schedule follow-up appointments for touch-up treatments.
