Are anti-wrinkle injections a permanent solution for TMJ pain?

Unfortunately, anti-wrinkle injections are not a permanent fix for temporo-mandibular jaw (TMJ) dysfunction. However, they do provide a temporary fix – generally up to 6 months.

TMJ pain can arise from bruxism (teeth grinding). Dentists can prescribe a mouth guard as a prevention tool. When this doesn’t work for the patient, anti-wrinkle injections may be injected into the masseter and temporalis muscles to temporarily relax the muscles, causing the pain.

Anti-wrinkle injections start working in 1-5 days and peek effect is at the 2 week mark. Depending on the dose required, anti-wrinkle injections can last anywhere up to 6 months in the masseter muscle, as this is one of the strongest muscles in the face. At City Skin, we generally start with 25 units of anti-wrinkle injections per side, and find this is a good dose to last up to 6 months. Some people who are really strong may require more, and are advised to return for a follow-up in 2 weeks for re-assessment. It is a quick, relatively painless treatment, and charge $550 for 50 u its of anti-wrinkle injections for the masseters. An additional benefit of this treatment is that is also slims the face! When the masseters get used, this builds the muscle, much like when we go to the gym and lift weights. This often results in a square jaw appearance.
