What is the difference between permanent and non permanent dermal fillers?

Home > Questions > What is the difference between permanent and non permanent dermal fillers?

The main difference between permanent and non permanent dermal fillers is that non-permanent filler can be dissolved and is therefore safer to use in clinical practice.

Click video below to watch Dr Brown explain the difference between these two filler types

Non-permanent fillers

  • Non-permanent dermal fillers are used in over 95% of the dermal filler procedures carried out in Australia. These fillers are made hyaluronic acid – a sugar molecule found found naturally in the body.
  • Non permanent fillers last between 6 months and 2 years but most patients have a yearly top up of their filler.
  • Non permanent filler can be dissolved using an enzyme which breaks the filler down
  • We feel that these types of filler are much safer than permanent filler, especially with complex treatments such as tear trough, nose dermal filler and jawline fillers.

Permanent fillers

  • Permanent dermal fillers such as collagen and Polymethylmethacrolate (PMMA) were more commonly used in the 90s
  • They account for under 5% of all filler procedures carried out in Australia
  • Permanent fillers last for years which can be a problem if the filler remains full but the face around it ages
  • They cannot be dissolved in case of emergency or if patients want them removed

Which dermal fillers do we recommend?

At Cityskin we only use non-permanent dermal fillers. They can be reversed in the unlikely case of an emergency or if patients change their mind after their treatment.
