All About Anti-wrinkle Injections at Cityskin

Please note that, by law, we are not allowed to use the real names of the products, so we must call them ‘anti-wrinkle injections’ rather than use their brand names.

FAQs

Anti-wrinkle injections cause relaxation of muscles and the reduction of lines. The relaxation of muscles takes 5 – 12 days to work and the effects last for up to 4 months. When anti-wrinkle injections are performed, we place a small amount of anti-wrinkle product into the muscle. This product prevents the nerve from telling the muscle to contract.

Anti-wrinkle products have been used since the early 1980’s and were initially to treat a condition known as blepharospasm (uncontrolled eyelid contraction).

Crow’s Feet Treatment

Crow’s feet, also known as periorbital lines, are wrinkles that develop around the eyes due to repeated muscle contractions. In Australia, where exposure to strong UV light is common, these lines are common as we age. Managing crow’s feet helps maintain a youthful appearance.

To find out more about crow’s feet treatment, read our comprehensive guide here.

Frown (Brow) Lines Treatment

Frown lines or the ’11’ mark are the lines in between the eyebrows. It is normal to have these lines when frowning, but some people have these lines when at rest. If you have strong frown lines at rest, you may feel that you look angry. With our anti-wrinkle injections in Melbourne, you can safely and easily treat these lines and the effects last for up to 4 months. Read our full guide to frown line treatment here.

Forehead Lines Treatment

Forehead lines are common as we age. These lines are caused by using the forehead muscle ‘frontalis.’ If you look in the mirror and lift the eyebrows, you can see frontalis in action, lifting the eyebrows.

Upper Lip/Smokers Lines Treatment

Lines around the upper lips usually start to appear when a patient is over 40. As the skin loses elasticity, muscle tone and collagen small lines can start to appear around the lips. Smoking can rapidly accelerate the formation of these lines due to repeat pursing of the lips when smoking a cigarette.

There are several ways to treat upper lip lines. Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to soften these lines (4 small injections of 0.5 units in each injection point). We often use dermal filler to help give the upper lip area more support and less prone to wrinkling.

Facial Slimming and Tooth Grinding Treatment (Bruxism)

Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to treat tooth grinding and to slim the face. This is one of our most popular and common treatments at Cityskin. Have a read of our facial slimming and bruxism (tooth grinding) treatment guides.

It takes between 5 and 12 days for the anti-wrinkle product to take effect so results are not instant. The peak effect of the anti-wrinkle injections is at around 2 – 3 weeks. The “European” brand of anti-wrinkle product works quicker than the American brand and South Korean brand.

Anti-wrinkle products are made of a protein which is broken down naturally by the body. Ideally, the effects of anti-wrinkle injections should last 3-4 months but it can vary depending on the strength of the muscle (the stronger the muscle the more anti-wrinkle ‘units‘ that you need) and how quickly your body breaks down the product.

After the anti-wrinkle injection product has been injected, it sits at the end of the nerve to prevent transmission of the nerve signal. Anti-wrinkle products are very small proteins, and these are broken down by proteases – enzymes that break down proteins. This process takes place naturally over time and does vary between people. We estimate that the average patient’s results will last 3 months.

Anti-wrinkle injections prevent muscle contraction whereas dermal filler replaces lost volume. Dermal filler is a gelatinous product which is injected under the skin to replace lost volume. Dermal filler can ‘plump’ up the skin. Imagine the skin being like a circus tent with poles to hold it up and keep it taut. As we age, the canopy of the tent becomes looser, and we lose volume which allows the skin to become saggier. When we inject dermal filler, it is like putting extra poles up to lift the canopy of the tent up to make it taut again. The other way of looking at dermal filler is that it treats shadows on face. As we age, we lose collagen and volume, and this can cause shadows going down from the corner of the mouth.

Anti-wrinkle injections spread about 1.5cm around each injection point. The image below shows a Cityskin patient who took a photo of her upper face after a particularly tough F45 session. Anti-wrinkle injections reduce sweating and blushing in the areas injected and you can see this in the paler patches on the forehead and frown.

Understanding Anti-Wrinkle Treatments: Units, Brands, and Injections

When it comes to anti-wrinkle treatments, a ‘unit’ refers to a measured amount of the product used. The number of units required for each area of injection varies, and while our experience allows us to estimate the quantity needed, it’s important to note that it’s not an exact science. We recommend a follow-up appointment two weeks after treatment to assess its effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments.

Determining Unit Requirements:

Please keep in mind that the unit estimates provided below pertain to the American brand. If you opt for the European brand, we typically use more than double the number of European units. Use the following guide as a reference to estimate the number of units you may require. Please note that these estimates primarily apply to women, as men often need 1.5 times the units to achieve similar results. We have a full treatment guide for men here.

If you have never had treatment before and would like to read all about ‘units’ then click here.

Understanding Injections:

It’s essential to clarify that the number of units does not correspond directly to the number of injections. For instance, when treating the frown area, we commonly use 20 ‘units.’ However, these units are distributed across seven injection points, with a higher concentration in the centre of the frown where the muscle is strongest.

In Australia, there are three main anti-wrinkle brands available. Due to TGA regulations, we are unable to mention the brand names directly. However, on our website, we refer to them as ‘The American brand’, ‘The South Korean brand’ and ‘The European brand.’ It’s worth noting that when we mention ‘units’ on the Cityskin website, we are specifically referring to the American and South Korean brand.

You may have noticed that we refrain from mentioning specific brand names, and this restraint is due to regulatory restrictions. The advertising and marketing regulations surrounding anti-wrinkle injections, classified as prescription drugs, prohibit us from disclosing brand names.

As a clinic specialising in anti-wrinkle injections Melbourne, Cityskin is bound by these regulations, which extend to all clinics offering anti-wrinkle treatments across Australia. Hence, we are unable to publish brand names in any form of advertising or online communication, including our website and social media platforms.

However, we gladly inform you that during your consultation, we can openly discuss each brand, including their names. We are committed to providing you with comprehensive information and would be delighted to outline the advantages and considerations associated with our anti-wrinkle treatment brands during your consultation.

The frozen look is often undesirable and was popular around a decade ago when anti-wrinkle injections were newly introduced. During that time, many patients received extensive treatment on their foreheads to eliminate forehead lines. Although the lines were reduced, it resulted in a shiny, frozen appearance.

To prevent the frozen look, two conditions should be considered:

  1. Completely avoiding anti-wrinkle injections on the forehead, or
  1. If treating the forehead, using very small amounts of the product.

As the leaders in anti-wrinkle injections in Melbourne, we are familiar with all the common treatment problems. However, our expertise allows us to help our clients including avoid any issue and fix them when they do occur. Read all about it here.

Our expert medical injectors have years of training and are extremely careful when treating the brow to avoid eyelid heaviness.

We recommend a review of your anti-wrinkle treatment after 2 weeks to assess results and muscle movement. If you have had treatment to the masseter muscle, for facial slimming or tooth grinding, please schedule a review at 4-6 weeks. If you have any concerns before or after these review periods, please contact our team for assistance and further evaluation of your treatment.

Yes, you can. There is no evidence to say that you can’t lie down or sleep after treatment so go ahead!

The treatment really isn’t as uncomfortable as most patients expect. Lower crow’s feet, upper lip and outer frown are more uncomfortable to have treated, whereas the mid forehead and jawline are the least uncomfortable.

We performed a study of 21 patients that had never had treatment before. They were asked how painful they thought the procedure would be and then had anti-wrinkle injections. Patients were asked to give the discomfort a score out of 10 before the treatment and again afterwards. Patients were treated in either crow’s feet, forehead or frown lines (glabella). Ice was used to numb the skin before injection and 31g needles were used for treatment. Results: The average ‘expected’ pain was 5.48 out of 10 and the average ‘actual’ was 3.90 showing that injection are significantly less painful than patients expected.

Thankfully, a heavy eyelid, known as a ptosis, is incredibly rare after anti-wrinkle injections. We quote a 1 in 7,000 chance of a temporary heavy eyelid after treatment. If a heavy eyelid occurred, it would last approximately 2 weeks and have no long-term side effects. Eye drops can be used during the 2 weeks of heaviness until the effect wear off.

Treating the jawline with anti-wrinkle injections can create a strong jawline and angle of jaw. The patient in this photo has had anti-wrinkle injections over a 2 year period to treat tooth grinding.

The photo shows a beautiful defined jawline which is a result of the flattening of the masseter muscle. We often use anti-wrinkle injections in conjunction with dermal fillers to sculpt the jawline.

We commonly see this result after long term facial slimming / tooth grinding treatment with anti-wrinkle injections.
