Migraine and tension headache treatment anti-wrinkle injections

Tension headache and migraine treatment | Cityskin Melbourne, Sydney & Adelaide

Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to treat migraines. By treating the frown and forehead with anti-wrinkle injections some patients with migraines and tension can get improvement in their symptoms.

Sometimes we treat the TMJ / masseter muscle in patients who are tooth grinders. If you are a tooth grinder make sure you read our article on tooth grinding treatment at Cityskin.

How do anti-wrinkle injections work for tension headache and migraine?

Tension headaches are often the result of overuse of the frontalis muscle in the forehead. Frontalis is the muscle of the forehead that lifts the eyebrows, shown in the diagram below.

Muscles of the face

We treat the forehead with anti-wrinkle injection to relax the muscles and reduce tension headaches.

How many injections will I need?

When treating the forehead we generally use between 5 and 13 units to achieve relaxation of the muscle. This involves between 5 and 13 small injections as shown in the diagram below. If you have never had treatment before and are unsure about ‘units’ then read our article on “What is an anti-wrinkle unit?” here.

Are forehead anti-wrinkle injections painful?

Forehead treatments are one of the least painful areas to have treated. It feels like a small mosquito bite when having an injection. The injection site may be a little red after treatment but this settled back to normal again after about 30 minutes

What will my forehead look like immediately after treatment?

How much does tension headache treatment cost?

We charge from $4 per unit for treatment. Have a read of our cost page for more information. We do not charge for a consultation at Cityskin.

What are the risks of treatment?

The potential risks of treatment include

  • A small bruise at the injection site
  • A mild headache the day after treatment
  • Heavy eyebrows if we just treat the forehead

When we treat patients for tension headaches we have to be careful that treating the forehead does not drop the height of the eyebrows. In this video Dr Brown explains how this can happen and how treating the frown at the same time can prevent a brow drop
